Inclass project for April 29th

We’re going to analyze and intretpret data from the UN.  By selecting 4 or 5 countries and comparing two or more indicators from that country, what conclusions can you draw.

  • You are to use data from http://data.un.org
  • Create graphs in either Excel or Illustrator
  • Put everything together on one sheet and finish your presentation in Illustrator
  • This is due at the end of class on the 1st of May

Inclass Assignment

We are going to create a small flyer or advertisement using only color as the design element. There shouldn’t be any other distracting elements other than the different colors to highlight the important parts

  • Open Adobe Illustrator
  • Create a small flyer or ad for a birthday party - include name, location, what to bring, etc.
  • Use only one font, no other decorative elements
  • Make three(3) differnt versions, varying the color. Use three different schemes from Adobe Kuler:
  1. Analgous
  2. Monochromatic
  3. Complementary
  • Upload all three to your blog with a short description by the end of class.

Class Instructions for Thursday, March 20th

First, I would like you to go to the following video of Michael Bierut talking about type. It’s only about 8 minutes and he makes some very interesting observations about type and how it’s perceived.

Next have a look at letterform anatomy to see all the different parts of a typeface.

Now, your assignment today is to create your own font. I’m not looking for all 26 letters and numbers, but you can complete them all if you feel the need. Ideally, I would like to see the following:

  • 6 different characters that show off the style of the font (straight, round, ascenders, decenders, etc).
  • One constant style throughout the font (Remember, don’t let things get out of control like Comic Sans!).
  • A brief writeup of what sort of look or theme you were trying to express with your font.

When finished with your font, please save it as an Illustrator (.ai) file to the computer and then save a copy (Save for Web and Devices) for the web. Upload your image to your blog.

Finally, revisit your font this weekend and have a look. I then want you to write another, separate refection of how your font turned out and what you would maybe adjust having had some time away from it. We will discuss these reflections in class on Tuesday.
